 Centaurea montana 'Alba'This is the knapweed that appears at the gardens at Chelsea Flower Show every year. The delicate spidery flowers are very attractive to butterflies and open from late spring until mid-summer - it can then be cut right back to the ground and may flower again later in the year. A cultivar of the more easily available Centaurea montana species that has piercing blue flowers, it is floppy and needs staking - though new breeding work in the 21st century aims to breed a more compact plant with the same attractive white flowers. The flowers open from buds which are very thistle like and it is tolerant of a wide range of sites and conditions, but particularly likes a more moisture retentive soil with lots of sunshine.
